It is the right connection, but you would not be able to use the cable provided with egreat because it has power supply and esata cable combined into one plug.
So you would only use that narrow esata cable (it comes with the drive), but power it separately, not through egreat NMT, so it should work.
As for the NMT apps , I dont know anymore, looks like it can be installed through USB after all, but I dont own this machine so really cant say.

Hi,
I just sold my 2-months old WDTV on ebay (for more than I paid in the store, so... )
M34A should arrive next week (ordered at deflixious on 08/05), I'm living in germany.
Great to read all the information in here, can't wait to play with the thing!
As for the external drive arrangement, it's indeed weird. My interim solution is that I used
an old external case I had lying around and assembled the HD (250GB Samsung 2.5') into it.
Yeah I know the cuts look crude, don't have the proper tools. But you get the idea.
If the M34A takes off, maybe there is even a market for such cases, done properly?

Does anybody know how to add the movie jukebox to EG-M34A? Most movie jukebox I found are designed to work with PCH but will it work with Egreat EG-M34A too?

Was considering the WD unit until I confirmed that it cannot play audio on 1080p/60fps files. My Sanyo FH1 HD camcorder will create .mp4 files in 1080p/60fps. Has anyone had success with the Egreat and .mp4 files that are 1080p/60fps ? I'm sure the video is fine but my concern is the audio.
I do not want to burn every 20min of our HD video to a DVD. A media player solution via USB storage device obviously makes more sense here. Can the Egreat handle this?

It works the same as PCH. I successfully installed YAMJ.

YAMJ application does look a bit complicated but I guess I will learn how to do it anyway. Thanks!

Ok, I finally received my m34a tank, with wi-fi, and I just can't seem to get the network encryption right. It works if I turn off encryption at the wireless router. I read that the m34a has a problem when the router is configured not to broadcast the ssid, but I can't get it secure with or without broadcasting.
I'm having to use wep 64 because of an old laptop I use in the kitchen. There are selections for wep 64 hex and ascii in the m34a but the response it gives when I try is 'Not Available'. Any Ideas? I am not great with wireless, I fumbled my way thru my home network. It has worked here just great until I try adding the m34a.

Just received my egreat, did the initial setup, played a few movies, all fine.
It came with firmware 50-17-090125-15-EGR-403-000, advertising itself as M34B (not A!).
I foolishly decided to upgrade to Februar firmware '50-17-090201-15-EGR-403-000.bin', downloaded from the official site. Put in on a FAT16 USB-Stick, went to linda.htm, pressed ENTER. It said something about downloading, then CRC-checking, then kernel programming.
After a few seconds a message came up 'failed, please reboot'. Which I did.
And since then it's dead, no screen output at all. Power and network lamp working when switched on but no screen signal. I tried TV mode = auto on the Remote, but that can't be it anyway as even with the wrong TV mode it should display the initial logo. But nothing. If I put an USB device in, it flickers, but nothing else happens.
I don't dare to hope that anyone here has an idea how to recover the unit?

I found this Firmware recovery tool on their site.
Also , HERE are instructions on how to do it..
Although M31B is mentioned, M34A uses the same firmware, so hopefully this helps you save your unit.
Also, perhaps it is possible to replace firmware file in this recovery package with the desired one, but rename it so that the name is not changed..(just guessing) .

Thanks for your help!
Meanwhile I did already try the recovers firmware, with 3 different USB devices, but to no avail. Mostly there is nothing happening at all, sometimes I see a millisecond flash of red on the screen, that turns to permanent yellow, which according to the readme means: recovery failed.
The only thing left to try is to rename the 50-17-090125-15-EGR-403-000 firmware as you suggest... fingers crossed.
I already disassembled the unit looking for any jumpers, but no luck.
As even the recovery process seems so shaky, I'm beginning to suspect that there's something wrong with the USB ports on this device. After all that's were it started to go wrong when it failed to upgrade to their latest firmware.

Man you're a genius... it's alive again!
Renaming '50-17-090125-15-EGR-403-000.bin' to 'up5fw2TP.bin' worked!
What a relieve. As I'm in germany, sending the unit back in would have taken months, I guess.
Many, many thanks for your suggestion.
Just for general information, on the board of my device it says
EGREAT M-34A V1.3
20090401
My experience might have been an exception, but still, a little warning to all if you try to upgrade the unit to the february firmware.
Greetings - daralla

yes I believe so, as I am using a Popcorn Hour A100 remote control file programmed into my Slingbox to control the Egreat M34A.

Yes, I think it will work because I am using a Logitech Harmony remote with popcorn hour remote control database. I use button data from popcorn hour remote control because I need to use color button and home button for several NMT apps. And it is working perfect with eGreat EG-M34A so far.

dralla,
I just tried to update mine to 2/2009 firmware and now my screen boots to NMT screen then turns blue. Did you have to use the recovery tool with the newest firmware to fix it? I tried just putting the firmware from 2/09 and didn't change the name?
What was the exact procedure you did to get it fixed.
1.recovery tool
2. firmware run on root of usb with bin file changed to 'up5fw2TP'?

First: did you try to press 'TV Mode' and '0' on the Remote when on your blue screen?
It should re-detect the correct output settings for your setup. You could also try other numbers.
I don't think its bricked like mine was, I had no screen output at all, not even the Logo, at that stage.
What did it say when you attempted upgrading to the february FW, did it report failure or success?
Anyway, here's how recovery worked on mine (still not sure if really necessary on your unit!) :
- download the recovery firmware for the M31B from their site (recovery_080612-15-EGR-402.rar)
- unpack, then delete the FW that came with it, but keep the 'bootimage.bin'
- download the January firmware 'M31B090125.rar
- unpack, rename '50-17-090125-15-EGR-403-000.bin' to 'up5fw2TP.bin'
- put both 'bootimage.bin' and the renamed 'up5fw2TP.bin' onto the root of an USB drive (I used a cheap 1GB formatted as FAT16)
- switch the M34A off, unplug everything, then connect only the composite cables, then the USB drive, then the power cord
- switch the unit on
- after a few sec it should present a red screen with some small white dots in the upper half of the screen indicating recovery progress
- if the screen turns white, recovery is finished, now disconnect/connect power again
Notes:
- if it doesn't work first, keep tring a few times
- if the screen turns yellow instead of red, recovery was canceled. Try again.
- I recommend the January firmware because that worked with me. Could be that the latest would work too, but I can't say.
Good luck!

At the moment I'm the owner of a WDTV player.
I'm thinking about to buy a EGREAT EG-M34A.
I've got a question about the power supply.
Is it possible to connect a 2.5 inch usb powered drive?
Or do I need a external power supply?
On the WDTV it is not neccesery to use a external powersupply, it gets it's power from the USB port

I have a question. Can this thing decode multichannel flac and output it as lpcm via HDMI? I bought the WD TV without really looking into it, only to find out that it can't. Also, does this have any problem playing back 1080p BD remuxes? Especially the AVC ones that really screw with the WD TV? Very interested in this player now that I know what the WD TV can and can't do. Thanks!

Capek,
i don't think you are going to find a nmt-type device that plays multichannel flac.
i am looking into these ion pcs instead...

Hello all, and thanks for the great info and videos. After spending hours reading and debating between the WDTV and the Egreat, I believe I have finally made my decision! :-) I have bookmarked this thread as my home as I get into the egreat. I am looking forward to it. After reading this thread, I am left with two quick (and hopefully not too stupid) questions.
1. A very cool thing (IMO) that the WD does is, if you have multiple drives attached, all content is displayed as if on one drive. Does this do the same, or do you have to access each drive?
2. Why is this machine not more popular? I've heard/read LOTS about the WDTV and PCH, as well as a little about the Kodak Theatre, but have heard NOTHING about this unit before these last few days. The WDTV thread(S) are huge compared to this.
Thanks for any and all info! Looking forward to sending in my order.
P.S. Actually would like to clarify a third thing if possible. It seems hinted, but not verified that you can install NMT apps via USB and that you don't necessarily have to go through the SATA drive. Can anyone verify?
THANKS AGAIN!

Being a new owner of the E34, I have noticed that it sometimes crashes after a series (4-5) of pauses and needs rebooting, and also after a pause, there is no sound for up to minute.
It's using the latest software, sound is via the rca sockets, and the files are mkv's which play fine on the WDTV box and all PC based players.
Cheers

I have an egreat M34A with the firmware from last Dec; which I think is current
it is working fine overall and it plays DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD fine but it struggles with PCM 5.1 uncompressed sound from blu-ray files
It will usually only play the left and right channels
I originally thought it was my pre amp but I can play blu-ray discs with PCM 5.1 and they work fine but playing those files from the M34A is a problem with no center or rear channels
does anyone know how to correct this? I have not seen any new firmware to address this issue
please let me know

Hi, I was wondering if this FW would work on my EG-M35A? I have 50-17-091202-15EGR-405-000, on at the moment, but the app's will not work. I have tried loading them a few times now using diffrent HD and always get the same message 'source file invalid' so it looks like the NMT App's mite have a problem. Any thoughts?

EG-M34A uses the old Realtek chipset.
EG-M35A uses the newer Sigma Designs chipset.
Firmwares are not cross-flashable between the two competing chipsets.
EDIT.... oops.... I posted incorrect info, see post by zrdb below.

Wrong-the EG-34A uses the old Sigma 8635, the EG-M35A also uses the Sigma 8635-the firmware should be interchangeable between the 2.

I tried using the FW last night and nothing happened! My player 'timed outed' and then did not want to boot! took me most of the night playing around with it to get it working properly again. I am actuly only really wanting to get the app's to work on this player. It plays most files very well, so I thing the fw is still good. Just the networking part that is driving me mad!

I had read somewhere that Popcorn Hour is disabling cross flashing. I was wondering if I use this firmware will I still be able to install the NMT applications? I really need these functions.

OK, I 've tested crossflashing for everyone.
1. Install firmware from Egreat ftp above (wakeup360's post). From now on your Egreat M34A will think it's a PCH A-110!
2. Install latest PCH A-110 firmware, with NMT apps from here ----> http://www.popcornhour.com/download/...ware-A110.html
Use a clean hard drive to install the NMT apps (not one with Egreat NMT apps installed in it, it won't let you install over them)
Done!!!

edit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
New popcornhour a-110 firmware out ( check above for download link) with header compression removal fix for .mkv
firmware + nmt apps work 100% on the egreat m34a
kudos to popcornhour for still supporting their older products (unlike western digital and others)

Since we're discussing cross flashing between PCH & Egreat...
For those with the original PopcornHour A-100 (not the A-110) there is a crossflash available from the Egreat EG-M31a (not the EG-M34a discussed in this thread) to enable DTS downmix for the A-100. I used on my A-100 and it works perfectly. DTS downmix is physically possible with the A-100's hardware, but PCH didn't pay for the license for it, but Egreat did (supposedly).
Do a google search for 'dts downmix for a-100' if you're interested.
And as always- cross flash @ your own risk!

+1
That's one thing that sucks about Egreat.... their support is almost zero!
If I had to guess, I'd say all their FW is probably hacked/patched PCH firmware that they haven't payed for, including their DTS license.

Try installing from USB, maybe downloading the firmware runs a system check or something.

First install the FW from post# 386 in this thread, reboot and confirm that you see the PopcornHour (rather than egreat) startup splash screen, then download the current PCH A-110 firmware onto a USB flashdrive then update from there. Worked perfect for me on my EG-M34A.

I'll give the post #386 file a shot.
I used the most recent file off the EGreat web site and it installed fine but i don't recall seeing anything popcornhour at all.
Once I'd done that I downloaded the pch firmware and tried to update but then got the cross customer error message.
I then got adventurous and tried the Dune tool. It made a backup fine, but I tried five times to install the pch firmware included with it and each time it went about two minutes and then went back to the blue background nmt screen and said the requested action couldn't be performed and to press the return button. when I did it went back to the Dune menu screen.
I rebooted and then it thought it was a popcorn hour and I could even update with the most recent popcorn hour firmware, however the network connection didn't work. It'd never get an IP address in automatic and wouldn't work in manual mode either.
I rebooted and tried the pch firmware recovery tool but it blew right by it and just booted normally.
I decided to revert back so I attempted to use the Dune tool to restore the original firmware - it again would go for about two minutes and then error out. Tried five times in a row.
I then rebooted and got the EGreat 1080i screen, then a flash and nothing - it was deader than a doornail! I tried changing the tv type and stuff but nothing worked.
I then downloaded and tried the EGreat firmware recovery tool and it worked a treat - booted up, did the red screen, red screen with white dots, then white screen. Upon rebooting it was back up and running - whew!
I'm wondering if there aren't different pcb board versions with slight differences or something?
Like I said though, I never saw anything pch related after using the last update on the EGreat support page so I think I'll suck it up and try the one from the link in post #386 - wish me luck!

OK, so you could like follow the directions and use the file linked to in post #386, or you could do it my way via the Dune let's dork the box and luck out and recover it but never quite get it working as a pch route . . . I suggest the follow the directions route!
I downloaded the proper file and it updated as normal and when it rebooted it was a popcorn hour! I even hit the check for updates button over in the maintenance section and it found and updated the firmware without issue!
So far so good, I couldn't find anything that didn't work as normal and it even kept all my network shares, settings, etc. just like a normal firmware update. I don't have a hard drive attached to this unit though so I couldn't test the sata port, I will shortly though and I'll make a point to use it a bit just to make sure everything is working fine but from everyone else's experiences I'm sure they will.
Thanks guys - I appreciate it and I humbly apologize for not following the directions in the first place!

Glad it worked out for you slr_65....
It's pretty straight forward if you look at post 386. I'm very cautious when performing unauthorized actions such as cross-flashing so I made sure that others did successfully cross-flash with that modded PCH firmware before I tried it on my EG-M34A.
It doesn't really seem like there's too much more to be done with the PCH A-110/EG-M34A players firmware wise at this point case everything just works- I may just leave my EG-M34A where it is now with the current PCH A-110 FW.

I dunno about that, there's still quite a few bugs being found in the current firmware from what I've read. For the most part though everything does work.
One thing I would like is the ability to control how much it skips forward or backwards for ff/rw. My htpc runs GBPVR and I have the fast forward set to 30 seconds and the rewind set to 10 seconds and that just works PERFECTLY.

Thx wakeup360 for posting links to the cross-flashable firmware. Seems impossible to find any recent updates on egreat's sites (most of which look dead now).
I was concerned that I'd lose DTS downmix by going from the eGreat firmware to PCH. Happily I can report that DTS downmix continues to work. Upgrading to the latest PCH A110 firmware adds support for MKV compressed headers which is great.

Hi,
I want to crossflash my Egreat M34A with the firmware from the Popcorn 110A.
( I'm going to use the firmware mentioned in post#368 by wakeup 360)
I have a harddisk formatted ext2, connected via the SATA cable, with the Egreat applications on it.
Should I disconnect this harddisk before flashing the firmware, or do I need to format it with NTSF?
Or will I be prompted by the firmware to format the harddisk?
What kind of applications will I get after flashing the firmware from the popcorn?

Hi, I saw one of the forums that a user already installed a-110 firmware to m32b via pch recovery mode.
I dont know the details but i will also be glad if somebody can share that details.

Has anything changed as far as cross flashing the egreat m34a with the pch firmware? I downloaded the firmware from post 386 and I have yet to flash. I read above that some users were having issues flashing the latest pch firmware and wanted to know what is the latest pch firmware that will flash to the cross flashed m34a?
Any new information would be greatly appreciated.
